While on a drive through Orange County we came across this Historic home near Montpelier, It was built by George Gilmore, born a slave on James Madison's Montpelier estate, was emancipated after the Civil War. He built this cabin for his wife Polly and their five children. In 1901, at age 91, he purchased the 16.1 acres that he farmed. Of coarse, Montpelier, is located near Orange, Virginia and was the plantation estate of the prominent Madison family of Virginia, including James Madison, fourth President of the United States.
